Road closed in Oldham while wooden bridge seen 'sagging' is dismantled

A wooden bridge in Oldham is being dismantled after it was seen "sagging".

Oldham Council have closed off Church Road, in Uppermill, following reports the Bridleway Bridge had become unsafe.

A member of the public called the fire service on Saturday after the bridge was seen "sagging in the middle" and there were concerns it could collapse into the road.

The fire service sealed off pedestrian access to the bridge and alerted Oldham Council.

An inspection of the bridge took place on Monday.

Oldham Council have since sealed off the road underneath the bridge while it is being dismantled.

A statement posted on the council Facebook page said: "Church Road, Uppermill, will temporarily stay closed while we remove the bridleway bridge which has become structurally unsafe.

"Please use alternative routes until the road reopens.

"We’ll keep you updated when we have more information."

It is unknown at this stage when the road will be able to re-open again.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "At 7.41am on May 30 we received a 999 call which said a pedestrian bridge on Church Road was sagging in the middle and could collapse onto the road.

"Fire fighters attended the scene and closed off pedestrian access to the bridge."
