Road closed in both directions as huge sinkhole opens up in middle of street

A huge sinkhole has opened up in the middle of a street causing road closures and traffic problems.

The road in Tuebrook opened up late on Sunday evening and was later blocked off by council workers.

Metal gates, traffic cones and barriers have been erected around the large basin which is directly in the centre of residential street.

Buckingham Road was closed in both directions by the council, a street joining West Derby Road to Ellerslie Road.

Neighbours on the street faced some difficulty as they tried to drive in and out of the area on Monday morning but by the afternoon, traffic was said to be coping well.

Images taken on Buckingham Road show the size of the sinkhole and the efforts made by the council to keep people away from it.

Debris and large pieces of concrete have fallen into the hole that is believed to have become bigger overnight.

Engineers will be brought in over the coming days to repair the sinkhole and make the road safe again.

It is expected that road closures will remain in place for a number of days until the work has been carried out.
