Road closed as car hits telegraph pole at East Lancs junction

A man in his 80s was taken to hospital after his car smashed into a telegraph pole in a crash that sparked lengthy road closures last night.

Merseyside Police had warned motorists in a tweet to find alternative routes as emergency services dealt with the accident along the B5203 Blindfoot Road in Rainford.

Today police told the ECHO the crash involved a single vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf which struck a telegraph pole.

Police were called to the scene at 5.20pm and the road had to be closed in both directions at the Blindfoot Island / East Lancs junction and also at the Rainford Bypass.

The driver a man in his 80s was taken to hospital, but police stressed this was as a precautionary measure.

The road closures were in place for more than two hours, with the roads eventually reopening at 7.30pm.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We were called to a single vehicle collision at 5.20pm, a Volkswagen Golf driven by a man in his 80s has been in collision with a telegraph pole.

"The man was taken to hospital as a precaution."

He added: "The road was closed for around two hours, mainly due to the damage caused to the telegraph pole."
