A truck and trailer caught fire after crashing on the Kaimai Hill in Waikato, blocking the road.

The unit crashed on State Highway 29, 2km east of the intersection of Rapurapu and Tepoi roads, on the Matamata side of the hill.

The NZ Transport Agency says the fire is out, however, there is a diesel spill across the road's two lanes.

Emergency services are at the scene and authorities warn the road could be closed until at least 8pm.

Motorists are advised to take other routes and a detour has been set up via SH36 and SH5 for those travelling between Tauranga and Hamilton.
