Road closed after scrap metal lorry overturns at the Rocket

A scrap metal lorry overturned and shed its load near the Rocket flyover early this morning (Saturday).

The driver escaped with cuts and bruises after the incident at around 5.20am today. The overturned vehicle left the roadway strewn with scrap metal and other waste and led to the M62 being closed in both directions between J4 (for The Rocket) and J5 (for Huyton).

Emergency services are in attendance at the scene and warned that recovering the vehicle and clearing up the mess was likely to be "a protracted operation."

An eyewitness reported: "Driver was ok. Cuts and bruises but sat at the side of the road at about 6:30 talking to the police and ambulance service. Happened about 5:20 I think."

North West Motorway Police posted on their social media account: "We currently have the M62 closed in both directions from the Rocket to junction 5 whilst we recover an overturned LGV - this is likely to be a protracted operation - there is no access onto the M62 from Bowring Park."
