Road closed after leaking main sends water pouring down street in Mossley

A leaking water main has forced the partial closure of a road in Mossley.

Part of Stamford Street has been shut off to allow for repair work, which United Utilities says will be carried out later tonight.

It says it has not carried out the work sooner to try to minimise disruption, as the pipe serves around 200 homes and the valves to shut it off are in the middle of a busy road.

Gerry Walter, who lives nearby, says a 'large stream' of water has been pouring down the road since it was dug up on Sunday.

He says water had been leaking into the cellar of a neighbouring property, causing it to flood, for around two weeks prior to that.

A spokeswoman for United Utilities said: "It’s always a balance between trying to fix a leak as quickly as we can, but trying to avoid disrupting local water supplies and traffic.

"This particular leak is on a pipe serving around 200 local properties.

"To turn it off we need to operate valves in the middle of a busy road.

"So we made the decision to postpone the repair until tonight at about 11pm when the traffic is lighter, demand for water is less and local shops are closed.

"We will use our water tankers to keep water on for most of the properties served by the pipe, and the repair should be complete by Tuesday morning."
