A fuel tanker caught fire on the Monaro Highway, south of Williamsdale, early on Monday morning.

The B-double fuel tanker was carrying a combination of diesel and petroleum, and while no injuries were reported, the driver was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The fire has now been extinguished and firefighters are conduction clean-up operations, after crews safely monitored the tanker as the 48,000-litre fuel load burnt through into the early morning.

The cause of the fire is unknown but has not been deemed suspicious.

The road remained closed for several hours, with ACT Fire & Rescue working with ACT Roads to deem the area safe.

Emergency services responded to the incident, including: ACT Fire & Rescue, ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Rural Fire Service, Fire & Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, ACT & NSW Policing and Environmental Protection Authority.
