Road closed after four-vehicle crash in Rawtenstall

A four-vehicle crash has led to the closure of a road in Rossendale, LancsLive reports.

Police officers and ambulance crews rushed to Bacup Road, in Rawtenstall, at around 3.20pm today (May 17) after receiving reports of the incident.

Lancashire Police subsequently closed off surrounding junctions to prevent traffic from entering the road while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "Please be mindful when travelling in the area. We will update you once the road is reopened and thank you for your patience."

At 4.20pm, another police spokesperson said that "it looks like there are a few people with injuries but they are quite minor" and that they were waiting for the road to re-open.

It is thought that a recovery operation is ongoing in order to allow the road to re-open.

Around the same time, the police's road unit tweeted: "Road Traffic Collision [on] Bacup Road, Rawtenstall. Thankfully minor injuries but the road will be closed for a while longer until the vehicles are recovered."

Images from the scene of the crash show small crowds gathered around a police cordon with an ambulance and rapid response vehicles present within the cordon.
