Road chaos under way

The New Year exodus began with Phahon Yothin Road clogged with outbound traffic as people headed out of Bangkok yesterday.

A long tailback was visible along outbound lanes of Phahon Yothin Road heading North, particularly in front of Pratunam Pra-in market in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district. Heavy traffic was also reported on the Northeast-bound Mittraphap highway.

Vehicles also crawled along the Pa-in outer ring road by Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Wang Noi district of Ayutthaya where traffic on Phahon Yothin Road as well as the western and eastern outer ring roads to get to the Northeast join. Special lanes were opened to help relieve the congestion.

It was also heavy going in Nakhon Sawan where long queues heading North had formed on the road linking Highway No.117 at Utthayan Sawan T-junction in Muang district.

In Prachuap Khiri Khan, a 51-year-old man died when his pickup truck crashed into a tree in Hua Hin district.
