Road chaos to continue on one of city's 'busiest junctions' after traffic light destroyed in crash

Road chaos is expected to continue at one of Manchester's 'busiest junctions' after a traffic light was destroyed in a crash. The collision, at the junction of Trinity Way and Regent Road damaged the traffic signal box on January 17.

The Manchester Evening News previously reported how roads around the Mancunian Way and Regent Road came to a standstill after the collision, with heavy congestion and long rush hour delays. Police said a car went through the barriers at Water Street into a building site at around 5am.

Repairs are still being carried on the damaged signal box on Regent Road, however it is unlikely to be fully back up and running until Friday afternoon at the earliest (January 20).

Transport for Greater Manchester has confirmed that temporary portable signals have been installed in the meantime, but that they only allow road users to pass in one direction at a time, causing further delays. Engineers are on site and managing the signals in response to traffic conditions where possible.

Drivers are now being urged to find other routes to avoid further traffic problems over the coming days. The busiest time at the junction are between 7am and 9.30am, and also 4pm to 7pm.

TfGM’s Head of Highways, Peter Boulton, said: “Arguably this could not have happened at a worse location as this is one of the busiest junctions in the city-region. The unit has been completely destroyed and engineers are working hard to get the signals back up and running.

“We don’t expect this to be done until Friday afternoon and that means that unfortunately there is likely to be significant disruption in the area until then. I’d encouraged people to avoid the area if at all possible or at least try to avoid the very busiest times.”
