Road chaos at Ayrshire beach as thousands of motorists turn out for car cruise

Roads in Irvine were subjected to chaotic scenes this evening as thousands of people attended a car cruise event.

Drivers have reported gridlock on numerous roads and tailbacks that extended a few miles back as far as Tarryholme.

The event is thought to be the largest of its kind held in Ayrshire since the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020.

And motors were at a standstill on Portland Street right down to Ardagh Glass along with harbourside being swamped with cars

Earlier today police warned that congestion could be an issue in the town.

The statement from cops from earlier today read: "We are aware of a proposed car cruise event taking place at Irvine Beach Park today.

"If this event does go ahead, it will be policed appropriately and anyone travelling to it should ensure they are safe and free to do so under the Scottish Government’s coronavirus guidelines.

"There may be some congestion in the area and possible delays to those wishing to visit Irvine Beach and Beach Park and we are urging all road users, including pedestrians, to take care now the roads are becoming busier due to the further easing of non-essential travel.

"You can expect to see a highly visible police presence in and around the Irvine area.

"We will be engaging with people to explain the coronavirus legislation and encourage compliance but will not hesitate to use our enforcement powers as a last resort."
