Road blocked off as smoke billows into the sky

A road was closed off after a garden fire sent smoke billowing into the sky.

Fire crews were called to a fire in a residential yard which backs onto Glenalmond Road, off King Street in Egremont, Wirral, today at around 3.33pm.

Photos of the scene show two fire engines in attendance and the road blocked off with a cordon in place as firefighters tackled the blaze.

A video taken by an eyewitness showed black smoke billowing into the sky near the Texaco petrol station on King Street.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire with two high pressure hose reels and the fire was extinguished quickly.

Crews then checked surrounding properties for any of fire spread and left the scene just before 5pm.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "Fire crews have been called to a fire in a backyard backing onto Glenalmond Road, off King Street in Egremont.

"Two fire engines were in attendance. Crews were alerted at 3.33pm and on scene at 3.37pm.

"Crews arrived to find a fire in the back yard of a three storey terraced house.

"Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire with two high pressure hose reels and the fire was extinguished quickly.

"Firefighters checked surrounding properties for any sign of fire spread and left the scene at 4.38pm."
