RNLI save three fishermen from drowning after boat capsized near Roker Pier

Three men were rescued from drowning by staff from RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station at Roker Pier after their fishing boat capsized.

The incident took place at 2pm on Saturday, September, 19 after the Sunderland Coastguard received a call from a fisherman on the pier.

After assessing the situation, Coastguard Rescue Officers (CRO) informed RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station who had launched their inshore lifeboats with a full crew.

A dramatic image shared by the RNLI shows how the three men were pulled out of the water and were given emergency care on the way back to Sunderland Marina.

Once the lifeboats were ashore, the fishermen were then taken to Sunderland Marina were they received first aid from CRO's for their minimal injuries and hypothermia.

The three men were handed over to the care of the North East Ambulance Service.

In any coastal emergency, please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard
