Paddleboarder saved by rescuers after cries for help in Porthcawl

A stand up paddleboarder had to be rescued by the RNLI after getting into difficulty in the sea.

Porthcawl's RNLI and Coastguard team were dispatched to the casualty who was "waving and shouting for help" in Newton Bay. The paddleboarder was found clinging to his board around 200m from shore.

The RNLI also reported a member of the public had swum out to help, however, they turned back once the lifeboat arrived. The man was able to be rescued by the volunteer lifeboat team who provided "casualty care."

He was then transported back to the lifeboat station where he was met by paramedics in a land ambulance.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said he was then taken to hospital for further checks: "Due to concerns over water inhalation and possible secondary drowning."
