RNLI issue Facebook warning over viral 'Storm Loch Ness' mass search event

If you're a Reddit regular or a viral sensation fanatic you may have seen the 'Storm Area 51' memes doing the rounds - the idea that if tens of thousands of people stormed the incredibly secretive US Air Force base in Nevada, UFO and alien conspiracies could be uncovered.

Naturally Scotland created their own version of the online craze with a Facebook event "Storm Loch Ness, Nessie can't hide from us all".

Arranged for the 21st of September at 3am in the morning, 18,000 people having clicked going and a further 39,000 having registered as interested in the event.

It might not seem like something that needs to be taken too seriously but the Royal National Lifeboat Institution rightfully are in case any Scottish conspiracy theorists turn up at the banks of the Loch this September.

Loch Ness RNLI team issued a statement on their Facebook page warning of the dangers of the waters of Loch Ness.

The post reads: "With no US Army involved, Loch Ness looks a little less hazardous than storming Area 51, but here we have our own set of problems!

Our Atlantic 85 lifeboat has an impressive survivor carrying capacity, but even that will be stretched by the 18,000 'attendees' of this event!"

The team then outline that 'jokes aside', the dangers of turning up at the loch are very real and revealed some concerning facts.

Why new drivers could be banned from driving at night

As well as unofficial reports of waves up to 16 feet high, the Loch is 230m - nearly two and a half times the height of Big Ben.

"The water temperature is cold!", wrote the team, "in fact, an average of 6 degrees centigrade all year round, meaning cold water shock and hypothermia are real dangers."

At the end of the post they signed off with "Nessie 1 - Bandwagon 0".
