PATNA: Now, RJD president Lalu Prasad will take a final decision on the names of party’s candidates for the forthcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha and the Bihar Vidhan Parishad.
The party’s state parliamentary board and the central parliamentary board on Tuesday unanimously authorized Lalu Prasad to finalise the names of party candidates for the both the elections.
While biennial election to five Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar is going to be held on June 10, the Election Commission is expected to soon announce the schedule for biennial election to seven seats of Bihar Vidhan Parishad.
Seven members of the Bihar Vidhan Parishad, including Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) president and former minister Mukesh Sahni, are set to retire from the house on July 21 this year. These members were elected from the Vidhan Sabha constituency.
A meeting of the RJD’s state parliamentary board held at the party’s state office here.
“The meeting, presided over by the state parliamentary board chairman and former minister Awadh Bihari Choudhary, unanimously passed a resolution to authorize the party’s national president Lalu Prasad to select the party’s candidates for the forthcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha and the Vidhan Parishad,” the RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan told TOI on Tuesday.
Soon after the state parliamentary board’s meeting, a meeting of the party’s central parliamentary board was held at the same venue.
The RJD’s national vice-president and former CM Rabri Devi presided over the second meeting. “The central parliamentary board approved the resolution of the state parliamentary board and unanimously authorized Lalu Prasad for selecting the party’s candidates,” Gagan said.
It is for the first time in the 25-year long history of the RJD that the meeting of its state and central parliamentary boards was held at the party office at Veerchand Patel Path. Earlier, such meetings used to be organized at the residence of Rabri Devi at 10, Circular Road.
“Whenever Lalu Ji remained in Patna, he used to call the meeting of the parliamentary board at Rabri’s residence. Even in absence of Lalu ji, such meetings were held at the 10, Circular Road. It is a good sign that the party leadership is now recognizing the importance of the organization and its office,” a senior RJD leader, who didn’t want to be identified, said.
