Riyad Mahrez picked Liverpool rival ahead of Kevin de Bruyne in FIFA Best Award voting

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez snubbed teammate Kevin de Bruyne to cast a higher vote for Liverpool rival Sadio Mane in the FIFA Best Award voting.

Mahrez, as Algeria captain, selected his top three players of the year - with his first choice receiving three points, his second receiving two and his final selection receiving a single point.

FIFA national team captains, along with national coaches, members of the media and fans were tallied together, with Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski finishing first ahead of Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

De Bruyne, who was named among the Best XI, may have hoped to receive a top vote from his teammate.

But he was instead behind Mane in the list.

Mahrez selected Lewandowski as his first choice, Mane as his second and De Bruyne as his third - therefore only handing a single point to his City colleague.

Virgil van Dijk, as Netherlands captain and a Liverpool man, kept his choices closer to home.

He selected Mane first, Mohamed Salah second and summer signing Thiago Alcantara, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich, third.

Naby Keita also had a vote as Guinea captain, selecting Lewandowski, Mane and Salah as his top three.

While Senegal boss Aliou Cisse picked Mane as his first choice.
