Riyad Mahrez makes big admission about Man City free kick that led to Champions League win vs PSG

Riyad Mahrez has admitted he made a complete mess of the free kick which set Manchester City on their way to the Champions League final.

The Blues winger had a long conversation with Kevin De Bruyne when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out, and with the first leg poised at 1-1.

Mahrez won the debate, but his shot arrowed straight towards the defensive wall, only for two PSG players to move their bodies out of the way and allow the ball to fly into the net.

City won the game 2-1 and advanced to the final after securing a 2-0 win in the second leg.

In an interview with French newspaper L'Equipe , Mahrez confessed he had been extremely fortunate, his shot going in after a discussion with both De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, another free-kick specialist.

"When the foul was called, even before we got the ball back, I said to Kevin 'I will take it.'" said Mahrez, who also scored both goals in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium.

"He was ok, then Gündogan joined us. We looked at how the wall was positioned and I said to him: 'I can see me overcoming it from the side'. Then I focused.

"But at the time of taking it, I completely messed it up. I feel that the ball is not going as I wanted and for a few milliseconds, I thought: 'I have messed it up.'

"And then I saw a little hole forming in the Paris wall and that the ball was heading straight for that spot. We had a lot of luck.”
