Riyad Mahrez explains how Man City penalty woes have made them stronger

Riyad Mahrez says his Manchester City teammates showed character to go on and beat Leicester after Sergio Aguero became the latest player to miss a penalty.

Aguero's second half spot kick was saved by the legs of Kasper Schmeichel, but City persevered and earned the win through Gabriel Jesus' late winner.

Jesus was fed through by former Leicester man Mahrez, who admitted he wanted to shoot before playing in the Brazilian.

"At first I wanted to shoot," Mahrez told Sky Sports.

"Then I saw the space and at the last moment I saw Gabby. I faked the shot and gave it to him.

"I knew he wouldn't be offside because he was watching the line so I gave him the ball and it was a very good finish. Of course if we won here we knew we would increase the gap and that's what we did."

However, City's win was in doubt after Aguero's penalty miss - their fourth of the season in the Premier League - and Mahrez heaped praise on his teammates for bouncing back to win the game.

"Sometimes it happens," he said of the penalty.

"The most important thing is that we won today - even though we missed a penalty. We missed a penalty against Tottenham and we lost.

"But today we showed a great reaction today after the miss so that the last time made us stronger."

Pep Guardiola was also asked about City's penalty issues, but stood by his mis-firing players.

"I like it when players gave the initiative to do it," the manager said.

"We didn't score against Spurs in Champions League last season, this season against Spurs we miss a penalty, in this kind of games it's a big difference.

"I like the mentality, I like Sergio taking the ball and wanting to take it. Practice, be positive, one idea, shoot and score a goal."

"It's not normal for the quality we have, but like I said to them the next one we're going to score and the taker be convinced, practice and be convinced and do it. Next time we're going to score and maybe it will be when we need it the most.
