Riyad Mahrez boosts Man City for Premier League opener at Wolves

Riyad Mahrez was back training at Manchester City on Tuesday ahead of their Premier League opening game at Wolves.

Mahrez was not involved with international fixtures but was forced to delay his return to the City Football Academy after testing positive for Covid-19 on his return from a summer holiday. After ten days of self-isolation the winger is back and will have almost a week to prove his fitness for the trip to Molineux.

City are moving towards having a full squad and Pep Guardiola was back on Monday to see the new faces at the club for the first time, having been in quarantine for the past fortnight after returning from a vacation in Barcelona. Phil Foden is also back training with the group following his expulsion from the England camp last week.

Aymeric Laporte is expected back this week - he has also been self-isolating following a positive Covid-19 test - and Guardiola will have to weigh up the fitness of his French defender and the rest of his players following a disrupted summer break and ahead of a packed schedule beginning with five games in 13 days.

Mahrez was praised by his manager after lockdown for being one of the most naturally fit players in the squad that needs less time to get up to speed. However, after starting seven of the first eight games when the season restarted in June he was one the bench for five of the last six and did not make an XI after the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal.
