Rivergate Centre blaze drama as one person taken to hospital after fire breaks out at shopping mall

One person was taken to hospital following a blaze at an Ayrshire shopping mall this morning.

Fire crews raced to the Rivergate Centre in Irvine shortly before 8am after an air conditioning unit on the roof of the building caught fire.

The centre was evacuated with one person taken to hospital as a precaution.

Frefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two main jets to extinguish the blaze before the call-out was brought to an end just before 10am.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We received multiple calls of a fire at the Rivergate Centre at 7.55am.

"Five appliances and a first call officer were dispatched to the incident and the fire was located to a gas powered air conditioning unit on the roof of the centre.

"One casualty was taken to hospital as a precaution."

The centre is now fully re-opened.
