"Riverdale" is about to change for the better.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, creator of the CW fan favorite, took to Instagram Thursday to support Vanessa Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz, following her call for more diversity in the media and better representation of black characters.
"We hear Vanessa. We love Vanessa. She's right. We're sorry," said Aguirre-Sacasa, before vowing to promise to fans what had already been promised to 28-year-old Morgan. "We will do better to honor her and the character she plays. As well as all of our actors and characters of color."
Aguirre-Sacasa added that, "CHANGE is happening and will continue to happen."
The series "will get bigger, not smaller," he continued: "Riverdale will be part of the movement, not outside it."
The show's writers had already donated to Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, Aguirre-Sacasa said. He added, "But we know where the work must happen for us. In the writers room."
Aguirre-Sacasa's pledge followed Morgan's tweets Tuesday in which she said, "I'm the only black series regular but also paid the least."
In one instance, Morgan said she feels Toni is "the token biracial bisexual."
The candid remarks followed her tweet earlier in the week in which Morgan expressed she's "tired of how black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or scary people" and "being used as side kick non dimensional characters to our white leads.
"It starts with the media," she said. "I'm not being quite (sic) anymore."
