Riverdale to end after seven seasons as bosses vow show will have 'appropriate send-off'

Riverdale is set to end after seven seasons.

The CW teen drama - which stars the likes of KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge) and Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper) - will end after its seventh season, which will premiere in 2023.

The show follows the story of Archie and his friends, as they find themselves entangled in the mysteries of Riverdale.

Speaking about the end of the show, Chairman and CEO of The CW, Mark Pedowitz, said: "I’m a big believer in giving series that have long runs an appropriate send-off. We want to make sure it goes out the right way.

"We had a long conversation with [executive producer] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] yesterday, who is thrilled by this news, and we will treat the show in the manner it deserves.

"I think they, too, felt that seven years is the right amount. As a fan myself, I do want to do what is right for the show."

Cole had previously admitted that he and some of his castmates were ready to "wrap the show up with a bow", as he added: "The arts are a whirlpool, man. If you need them, they suck you in.

"I'm not a creative force behind Riverdale. I actually have no creative control. We show up, receive the scripts often the day of, and we're asked to shoot," he adds as he also revealed he was asked to direct an episode but declined.

Cole had also previously predicted that the show could end after seven seasons.

"I think just in a straight-up legal sense, contractually it started at seven seasons, which is a pretty standard contract for film and television, so I don't know what happens after that," he said.

"But the world of Riverdale is open-ended enough to kind of flex alongside that. But I think the quality of a wonderful program is knowing how to wrap it up and say, 'Hey, we love you guys. This is the end, and I hope you guys enjoyed the ride."

Camila also echoed his sentiment, adding: "I give it another season. I think we'll go through season 7. Here's hoping. We'll see."
