Riverdale fans slam Hedwig and the Angry Inch musical episode for being 'so bad'

The latest musical instalment of teen drama Riverdale has been slammed by fans on social media.

The tribute to iconic Queer musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch saw cast members put on the glitter and glam rock make-up to belt out some tunes from the classic John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask show.

The latest episode, entitled Wicked Little Town, saw Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) lead Riverdale High in an attempt to revive the school's variety show.

Despite push back from school staff, Kevin and his friends rebel for the musical and sing its songs due to how "celebrates identities, genders, expressions of all kinds, and it speaks to their entire generation."

Musical episodes tend to go down well with Riverdale fans, but despite show-stopping rendtions of Tear Me Down, Origins of Love, and Random Number Generation, it was not as warmly received on social media this time around.

One fan wrote on Twitter : "It was just last night’s musical episode that was so bad guys, Riverdale isn't that bad."

Another tweeted: "If you are still watching this show, there is something wrong with your head. #riverdale "

Elsewhere, a different disgruntled fan commented: "Wasn't a huge fan of the #Riverdale Musical... mainly because I don't think the musical numbers were all that amazing though, could have been much better!!!"

"I HATE THE SINGING RIVERDALE EPISODES," concluded a different Twitter user.

Meanwhile, another confused viewer noted: "why has Riverdale suddenly become a f***ing musical? I have no idea what’s going on at this point."

One Riverdale viewer commented: "Why on earth are the producers of Riverdale so obsessed with chucking in the odd musical episode?? Just stop, it’s crap and none of them can sing."

A different nostalgic Twitter user wrote: "glee walked so riverdale could crash."

Finally, one asked: "What is the new riverdale ep this is so bad?"

Things look set to return to normal a bit with next week's episode, Lynchian, likely titled after surrealist director David Lynch, whose series Twin Peaks influenced Riverdale.

It remains to be seen if the drama surrounding Archie Andrews and Betty Cooper will continue, but will Bughead fans be able to stand it?

Production on Riverdale has shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it is unknown when the current season will conclude.

Two cast members confirmed to depart at the end of season 4 are Skeet Ulrich as F.P. Jones and Marisol Nichols as Hermione Lodge.

Riverdale season 4 continues weekly on Thursdays on Netflix.
