Rivera says choosing new Washington team name will likely take 16-18 months

For anyone who is wondering about the timeline of a name change in Washington, and how long they will be going by the ‘Washington Football Team’ moniker, I suggest you be patient.

No patient about hearing how long it will take, but be patient when it comes to deciding a new name.

Head coach Ron Rivera said as much on CBS This Morning with Gayle King, declaring that the team is doing what they can to take their time and make sure that they get this process right. To rush such a monumental decision could be detrimental to the team, and this is a squad that is looking to progress, not regress, in the future.

“No, we’re not close to making a decision,” Rivera said. “The biggest thing we’ve learned is that this is going to take steps — this can’t happen automatically. So we’re going to have to go through the process.”

That process could take a while. It consists of removing all signage and apparel and whatever you can think of that had the old team name and logo on it, and replacing it with new stuff. None of that can even be done until the team decides on a new name, which will rely on the constant vetting of fans, players, and sponsors.

“Truthfully, this is going to be about a 16-18 month process to do it the right way, and really not miss the opportunity to rebrand ourselves, hopefully for the next 100 years.”
