River Rhine celebrated in new dive watch

While in landlocked Switzerland, Oris has raised awareness of marine conservation in Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Clipperton atoll in the Eastern Pacific, as well as saving hammerhead sharks and endangered staghorn coral.

Departing from ocean protection, the Swiss watchmaker underlines the importance of water sources and salutes the River Rhine, through the Oris Source of Life timepiece, currently on display at the Siam Paragon Watch Expo till Aug 9.

The plight of the world's water sources, such as pollution levels, is emphasised by the brand, to encourage taking action against carelessness, neglect and waste.

The limited-edition diver's watch is available in 2,343 pieces -- the number referring to the height above sea level of Lai da Tuma, or Tomasee Lake, the source of the Rhine in the Swiss Alps in the canton of Graubünden.

The river then runs through five other European countries, the last being the Netherlands, where it empties into the North Sea.

Along the total distance of 1,233km, the river has been a source of life to those who've lived along it for centuries.

In northwest Switzerland, the Oris brook feeds into the Rhine that runs near the picturesque village of Hölstein, where the eponymous watch company was founded in 1904.

The name Oris has its origins in the Celtish "Aurisa" and Roman "Orusz", meaning watercourse.

The case back of the Oris Source of Life is embossed with a map of the majestic river, whereas the face has been designed in a colour scheme evoking the beauty of the Rhine.

Based on the Oris Aquis, the 43.5mm diver's watch has a unidirectional rotating bezel with a grey tungsten insert bearing a 60 minute timer scale for measuring dive times.

Indices and hands in Superluminova enhance readability underwater as well as of accurate diving time.

The automatic movement drives an inventive circular date indicator shown by a scale running from 1-31 around the centre of the watch's dial. A channel with a white indicator aligns with the scale and makes a full tour of the dial once a month to show the date.

Either with a metal bracelet or a grey rubber strap, the limited-edition model can be worn over a wetsuit for a dive while being water-resistant to 300m.
