Flood warnings issued for Didsbury, Northenden, Cheadle and Sale as Storm Chrisoph hits region

The River Mersey is very close to reaching the highest level ever recorded.

It comes as the Environment Agency issued four separate flood warnings for nearby areas including Didsbury, Northenden, Cheadle and Sale.

A flood alert is also in place for the River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

An emergency flood plan is understood to have been activated at Sale Water Park.

Flood gates have also been opened, taking some water away from the river and moving it to nearby fields.

The highest level ever recorded for the River Mersey is 3.69m, and was reached on Monday 21st November 2016 at 3:45am.

Met Office week ahead forecast: Storm Christoph, heavy rain warnings, risk of flooding

Current levels on the River Mersey at Ashton Weir are just below that level, with heavy rain set to continue.

Pictures from the river near Hollywood Way in Stockport show water levels having burst on to the nearby walkway.

A section of the footpath there has been temporarily closed due to the amount of surface water.

Footage also shows the river in parts of Northenden and West Didsbury close to bursting its banks.

"River levels are rising at the Didsbury river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall associated with Storm Christoph," the Environment Agency said.

"Consequently, flooding to properties is expected.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for land and property close to the River Mersey at Didsbury Golf Course and Cheadle Wood."

River levels are also rising at the Sale Ees river gauge, with flooding predicted for Sale Water Park on Wednesday.

Water levels at the Bollington Mill river gauge are also alarmingly high, with flooding to some properties expected.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for properties at and around Bollington Mill and Bollington Hall Farm," the Environment Agency added.
