River level drops after flood alert in Qld

Intense rain has eased in central Queensland but more thunderstorms are possible. (AAP)

Heavy rain is expected to persist in parts of central Queensland after flash flooding and rising river levels prompted an emergency warning overnight.

River heights in the town of Sapphire rose rapidly to above major flood levels, prompting a warning for residents to get to higher ground early on Wednesday morning.

Intense rainfall has now eased and river heights are dropping, but the Bureau of Meteorology warns more thunderstorms are possible inland.

Wet weather is also forecast to continue into the weekend for the southeast of the state.
