River Island recalls clothing as customers told 'stop wearing items IMMEDIATELY'

River Island has urgently recalled a number of clothing items over fears they could poison the wearer.

Five garment designs have been pulled from shelves while shoppers are being urged to stop wearing them immediately.

The products may contain dangerous levels of cadmium and lead, reports Wales Online.

Cadmium is usually found in rechargeable batteries and cigarette smoke and can affect your kidneys, lungs and bones.

Exposure to high levels of lead can cause anaemia, make you weak, and even cause serious harm to your kidneys and brain damage.

The public notice has been issued on its website as well as the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.

On its website River Island said: "It has come to our attention that the components on each product identified above contain Lead in excess of legal safety levels and presents a serious risk to the health of anyone wearing or handling the products.

"Affected products can be identified by the product identification numbers printed on the garments wash care label."

The store advises customers who bought any of the items to stop wearing them immediately, keep away from children and return or post to a River Island outlet for a full refund.

• Product No. 720271 – River Island sequin embellished cami top. Sold from June 2018.
• Product No. 725642 – River Island longline diamante studded hoody in cream. Sold from October 2018.
• Product No. 723969 – River Island check pattern dress with faux pearl button. Sold from July 2018.
• Product No. 723975 – River Island check pattern sleeveless blouse with faux pearl button. Sold from July 2018.
