River Island recalls five items of clothing after harmful chemicals discovered

River Island has recalled five items of clothing over fears they contain harmful chemicals.

The high street retailer, which has five stores in Glasgow, has issued the urgent alert for five womenwear pieces that have traces of chemicals in excess of the legally permitted levels.

The items that have been recalled are a check pattern dress with faux pearl button (Product No. 723969), check pattern sleeveless blouse with faux pearl button (Product No. 723975), embellished tassel playsuit (Product No. 714210), sequin embellished cami top (Product No. 720271), and a longline diamante studded hoody in cream (Product No. 725642).

A statement from River Island reads: "It had come to our attention that five womenswear garments contained traces of certain chemicals in excess of legally permitted levels within the EU. The excess quantities of these chemicals could only potentially cause harm if mouthed or ingested but safety comes first so we have recalled the products.

"We bought these products from suppliers who provided testing certificates indicating chemical content within the legal limits. We are working with these suppliers to investigate how this happened and to make sure it does not happen again.

"Affected products can be identified by the product identification numbers printed on the garments wash care label."

River Island have issued a warning to anyone that may have bought any of the items to stop wearing them immediately, return them to their nearest store or by post and keep them away from children.
