River Island is recalling a number of items of clothing over fears they have been made using dangerous levels of harmful chemicals - including lead.
The high-street fashion retailer has pulled five items from sale with the advice to those who have already bought the items to stop wearing them immediately.
The public notice has been issued on its website as well as the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and says that the clothes were sold online and in store as early as February 2018.
The first notice issued features the warning over a tassel playsuit, a sequin embellished cami top and a diamante hoodie which have been identified to contain "lead in excess of legal safety levels ".
The notice reads: "It has come to our attention that the components on each product identified above contain lead in excess of legal safety levels and presents a serious risk to the health of anyone wearing or handling the products."
Exposure to lead can create health risks and cause symptoms such as headaches, stomach pains and anaemia.
A second recall was then issued for a check pattern dress check pattern sleeveless blouse which both feature a faux pearl button over fears they could contain "Cadmium in excess of legal safety levels".
It said: "It has come to our attention that the faux pearl button located on the collars of both products contain Cadmium in excess of legal safety levels and presents a serious risk to the health of anyone wearing or handling the products."
The affected products can be identified by the product identification numbers printed on the garments wash care label.
These are:
- Product No. 714210 – River Island premium embellished tassel playsuit. Sold from February 2018.
- Product No. 720271 – River Island sequin embellished cami top. Sold from June 2018.
- Product No. 725642 – River Island longline diamante studded hoody in cream. Sold from October 2018.
- Product No. 723969 – River Island check pattern dress with faux pearl button. Sold from July 2018.
- Product No. 723975 – River Island check pattern sleeveless blouse with faux pearl button. Sold from July 2018.
Customers who have bought the clothing products are told to stop wearing them immediately, keep them away from children and return the product to a store or by post for a full refund.
