River Island recalls clothes found to contain high levels of poisonous chemicals

River Island has urgently recalled a number of garments that were found to have high levels of poisonous chemicals that could pose a "serious health risk to shoppers".

The high street chain has warned that three items sold in-store and online, including the premium embellished tassel playsuit (714210), longline diamante studded hoody in cream (725642) and sequin embellished cami top (720271), contain levels of lead that exceed "legal safety levels".

Short term side affects of lead poisoning include constipation, tiredness and a lack of appetite.

However exposure to high levels of lead can cause serious health problems - especially for children younger than six years and pregnant women - and can even be fatal.

The retailer has also recalled two further products, including a patterned sleeveless blouse with faux pearl buttons (723975) and a check patterned dress with faux pearl buttons (723969), which contains toxic levels of cadmium that put people wearing and handling the garments at "serious risk".

Customers can identify the affected products by using the product identification numbers printed on the garments' wash care label.

River Island has advised shoppers to stop wearing the products, keep them away from children and to return the whole product in-store or via post for a full refund.
