River Island confirms permanent closure of Nottingham city centre store

Fashion chain River Island is to permanently close its store in Nottingham city centre, the retailer has confirmed.

The Lister Gate branch will not open up again once lockdown measures are eased, leaving just one River Island store in the city, at the Nottingham Victoria centre.

In a statement a River Island spokesperson said: “I can confirm that the Lister Gate store will close permanently and not reopen after lockdown restrictions lift, however customers will still be able to shop in person at our nearby Nottingham Victoria store (subject to restrictions lifting).”

Reports have linked the River Island chain with possible closures since last summer when the company announced 250 jobs being cut at its head office in July, followed in August by a further 350 jobs lost at store management and senior sales level across its portfolio of around 300 stores.

The closure of the River Island store is the latest blow for the high streets of Nottinghamshire following the announcement that all Debenhams, Topshop and Miss Selfridge stores are to be shuttered across the county following major brand takeovers by ecommerce giants Boohoo and Asos.

The deals will see the Debenhams and former Arcadia brands remain in name only, with all bricks-and-mortar stores closing down and former shop staff likely to be left out of work.
