
Four locations flooded early Wednesday morning along the Mogami River in Yamagata Prefecture, where record downpours were observed due to a seasonal rain front that is stationary over the island of Honshu. In the town of Oishida and the village of Okura near the middle reaches of the river, there was extensive damage to residential areas. The prefectural government has set up a task force to check the extent of the damage and to call for caution. No one has been confirmed dead or injured.
According to the Shinjo River Office of the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, flooding occurred in Oishida in two places around 12 a.m. and in one place at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. Okura, downstream of Oishida, was also flooded at about 3 a.m.
According to the prefectural government, as of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, 88 houses in 12 municipalities were flooded above and below floor level. Evacuation directives were issued in five municipalities, including Okura. In 11 municipalities, about 2,400 people were evacuated. Forty-one rivers managed by the prefecture flooded in 44 locations. Farmland was flooded, and houses were damaged as rivers broke their banks.
