River Clyde tragedy as late night swimmer drowns in Bothwell

A man has died after drowning while swimming in the River Clyde in Lanarkshire late on Friday night.

Police were called to an incident in Bothwell at 10.10pm after two men were spotted in the river.

One of the swimmers made it to safety but the other man could not be found.

Police divers later recovered a 30-year-old man’s body from the river near Blantyre Mill Road and the David Livingstone Centre at around 3am.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "At 10.10pm emergency services responded to a report of two men in the River Clyde at Blantyre Mill Road, Bothwell.

"One of the men managed to get out of the water by himself and did not require medical treatment

"At 3am divers recovered the body of a 30-year-old man from the river.

"The death is being treated as non-suspicious."
