River City star Lindsey Campbell on Poppy's ordeal as stalker storyline reaches climax

River City fans have been gripped this year by Poppy's stalking ordeal as the plot continued to grow - and now the storyline will reach its dramatic climax.

Lawyer Poppy, played by Lindsey Campbell, has struggled under the increasing fear of her ordeal for months, and this week, viewers will finally learn who her stalker has been all this time.

Four suspects have been put forward as Poppy's potential stalker: her boyfriend Stevie (played by Iain Robertson), new criminal in town Tyler (played by Cameron Fulton), teen mum Ruby (played by Zindzi Hudson), and the doctor's son Cameron (played by Michael Wallace).

Speaking to Glasgow Live, Lindsey kept zipped about who the stalker could be - but shared her experience of taking on the major storyline, and the importance of getting it right.

"It's really important to show the reality of it and how it can affect someone over time," she said.

"It was vital to be able to have the time to film this and give it its due and make it more realistic."

As the toll of her ordeal has continues to affect Poppy, viewers have watched her actions and behaviour change - something Lindsey credits the writers with.

She said: "The writers have done a superb job in showing how it has affected her in terms of her decision-making and who she confides in.

"Her relationship with Stevie becomes very tense and distant. They feel like they're constantly butting heads against each other.

"Looking at what happens to victims, there is often a situation where there is difficulty in acknowledging what is happening to them.

"Poppy is very logical and prides herself on having very credible judgement, and that's one of the reasons that she is acting out."

In order to portray Poppy's ordeal accurately, Lindsey did a great deal of research to make the situation as real as possible.

"Reading factual accounts of situations like this was very important, but every experience some one can have is very individual," she said.

"With things like social media, we are so available to people, it can become quite murky. Often it's somebody the person knows, which is really frightening.

"There's a real responsibility when you're taking on a storyline like this, and the stakes are very high. Our challenge as actors is to always find the truth in it. You want to push yourself all the time, and this is definitely a challenge. Knowing you have a responsibility to do this as best as you can - it spurs you on."

Lindsey added: "I've never have the opportunity to play a character for such a long time and you really, really care for a character that you've been with for years. Whenever I read a script, I can hear her voice in everything, I know her very well.

"This was something new for me to play. For Poppy to be on the receiving end of something happening that she can't control is very new."

When asked what she hopes anyone who may currently be going through a similar ordeal takes from the storyline, Lindsey said, "If I could hope for one thing to come out of this storyline, it's that it gives people that may be experiencing this - or who knows someone that is - the confidence to get the help they need and speak out. It can be so hard to acknowledge it's happening."

River City's latest episode will air tomorrow (Monday, December 14) on BBC Scotland from 10pm.
