River City's Joyce Falconer 'surprised' to get call back to BBC soap but felt 'right at home' when she returned

River City 's Joyce Falconer says she was "surprised" to receive a call during lockdown asking her to return to Shieldinch.

The actress, who plays Roisin McIntyre, has been speaking about her time in the much-loved BBC Scotland soap ahead of its 20th anniversary this weekend.

Joyce, 53, says she believed that her character was "done and dusted", but felt right at home as soon as she stepped back onto the Montego Street cobbles.

Tomorrow, Saturday September 24, marks exactly two decades since River City aired and there'll be a 'River City: 20 Year Celebration' show on iPlayer, which will be hosted by Grant Scott, who plays Sam.

On Monday, September 26, there'll be a special anniversary episode which will centre around Stephen Purdon, who plays Bob O'Hara.

Written by Johnny McKnight, Bob reflects on two decades of living in Shieldinch and, after drinking from a mystical bottle of booze, best mates Bob and Angus wake up in a multiverse where many of the lost friends from their past still exist.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Joyce said: "It's lovely to be here for the 20th anniversary, me and Stephen have been here from the beginning and funnily enough were the last two to be cast.

"I just thought I was done and dusted, but the producer said they had a character in mind, and then decided to bring Roisin back.

"I felt very much at home and comfortable as soon as I got back on set," she added.

"I hadn't seen much of the original cast, so it was lovely to have everyone back here."

Roisin's previous exit from River City saw her run away to America with a sugar daddy.

During her first round in the soap, she married barman Raymond Henderson, before he ran off with her sister. But they will be reunited on Monday.

"I hadn't seen much of Paul Samson, who plays Raymond.

"I've got a wee part with him, so that is nice."

You can watch River City: 20 Year Celebration with Grant Scott on iPlayer from Saturday, and the River City 20th anniversary episode will air on the BBC Scotland channel at 10pm on Monday September 26, and on BBC One Scotland at 7pm on Tuesday September 27.
