River Bann angler finds 'suspected shotgun'

A ‘suspected shotgun’ has been found by an angler, police say.

The weapon, understood to be in poor condition, was discovered at the Bann on Saturday.

In a brief statement, a PSNI spokesman said: “Police in Causeway Coast and Glens have seized a firearm that was located by a member of the public fishing in the River Bann in Coleraine on Saturday (18th). The suspected shotgun is in a very poor condition. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The police have not issued any further details about the find and it is expected the shotgun will have to undergo checks to establish who had it before it ended up at the river and if it was used in any criminal activity previously.

It is unclear if the shotgun was submerged in the river or found somewhere on the shore.

The river is popular with anglers who travel from across Europe to fish it. The Lower Bann has been described online as “one of the most prolific salmon rivers in Ireland”.
