River Avon search stopped after reports a man had fallen into the water

Searches of the River Avon have stopped after reports that a man had fallen into the river, but no one has been found.

A large presence of emergency services was seen at the A4 Portway on Wednesday afternoon as a result of the search, and Avon and Somerset Police has now issued an update.

The force said that extensive searches were carried out by several agencies including police, fire and the coastguards.

A spokesperson for the force said on Thursday afternoon: "Following a concern for welfare report of a man in the River Avon on Wednesday 20 April, agencies including police, fire, coastguard and the harbour master were involved in extensive searches. Despite this no one was found.

"No further searches are planned at this time."

Searches were scaled back at around 3.30pm on Wednesday due to the tide. Some officers remained at the scene and police said the full search would continue later on the day once the tide had changed.

The Portway remained open but there were delays.
