River Aire flood risk as Storm Christoph hits Leeds with amber weather warning

Flood alerts are in place for the River Aire in Leeds as Storm Christoph is set is batter Britain with heavy rain.

As a result of the amber weather warning issued by The Met Office, which began this morning and will last until Thursday, flooding is likely in the city.

Flood alerts have been issued by the government's flood information service in two areas, advising residents that flooding is possible and to be prepared.

Over three days, two months worth of rain expected to fall, followed by snow in Yorkshire on Thursday.

Middle River Aire catchment

River levels are expected to rise in the Aire's middle catchment, in Leeds city centre, from today until Thursday morning.

Flooding of property, roads and farmland is possible, with high river levels expected from midday on Tuesday. Field teams are out checking flood defences and people are being advised to pout in place any flood defences they have.

Residents are also advised to avoid low lying footpaths near watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid areas which may be flooded.

The flood information service said : "The government’s website reads: “River levels are forecast to rise across the Wyke, Meanwood and Wortley Beck Catchments (and Middle River Aire catchment)."

Similar advice is issued to residents, including use of flood defences, avoiding low-lying paths and planning driving routes to avoid potentially flooded areas.
