Rivaldo reveals Rangers near miss as Brazilian legend opens up on Celtic trial offer

Celtic offering Brazilian superstar Rivaldo a trial rather than a contract is one of the most famous stories in Scottish football.

But it's now emerged that it wasn't just Martin O'Neill who was keen to sign the attacking midfielder after he left Milan.

It seems city rivals Rangers were also interested in bringing Rivaldo to Scotland, though ultimately he joined Greek giants Olympiakos.

He revealed in an interview with the Sun : "Rangers were also interested in me at that moment in my career and I appreciated their interest.

"About what club would I have chosen is tough.

"I know there is a big rivalry between the clubs and I would have probably chosen the one that I envisage as a better professional project to continue my career at that time."

Talks with Celtic went further, but broke down when they offered a trial rather than a contract.

Rivaldo recalled: "Some British clubs offered me a trial, Celtic and Bolton spring to mind.

"At the time it surprised me because I was in good form when I left AC Milan, so I did not understand their offer and the objective of it."

Rivaldo scored 130 goals in 235 games for Barcelona and was awarded the Ballon d'Or in 1999.

He won the World Cup and Copa America with Brazil, as well as two league titles with Barça.

The attacking midfielder was also part of the Milan side that won the Champions League in 2002-03, though he didn't get off the bench in the final.
