Rivaldo identifies the player who can fill Lionel Messi's boots ahead of El Clasico

Rivaldo reckons Neymar is the only player capable of replacing Lionel Messi when he hangs up his boots.

The Argentine ace, 32, has smashed more than 550 goals since making his debut for Barcelona as a teenager.

Messi still has 18 months to run on his current deal at the Nou Camp, but Rivaldo believes one of his former team-mates is the only person capable of filling the void.

Neymar, 27, netted more than 150 times for Barcelona before being sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a staggering £200m in 2017.

He has been linked with a move back to La Liga, with Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly keen.

Brazilian legend Rivaldo believes his former club should bring his compatriot back to Spain.

The Betfair ambassador said: "Messi won’t last forever. One day his final match will arrive and he will leave football.

"Now he is making the difference, scoring goals… but you have to have another player to play his actual role.

"Just one player can be the substitute of Messi at Barcelona and that player is Neymar.

"He was wrong leaving Barcelona, but, if he returns, he will be able to make the difference as Messi is doing now."

Messi will be hoping to fire Barcelona to victory in Wednesday night's El Clasico as they battle their bitter rivals for top spot with only goal difference separating the two sides.

Rivaldo added: "It's difficult to stop Messi, but I’m sure Real Madrid will try their best, because if not, he will score goals.

"A Clasico is a different match, but Messi is always calm in these matches. He's always looking for a goal.

"I do really think both teams are playing well and they are both in good condition to play this match. As I always say, there are no favourites."
