Rival Rory Stewart slams Sadiq Khan over removal of Uber permit

The decision to strip Uber of its licence to operate in London has been condemned by Sadiq Khan’s mayoral rival Rory Stewart.

The firm had its permit withdrawn by Transport for London on Monday after some 14,000 journeys were made by drivers who had faked their identity.

But it can still operate pending an expected court appeal next year.

Mr Stewart, a former Tory minister, said: “I don’t believe in a system where you manage people by taking their licences away... you need to stay on top of these things.”

A spokesman for Mr Khan said: “This shows a basic lack of understanding from Rory Stewart of how the licensing rules work... TfL have taken some of the boldest action of any regulator in the world holding Uber to account.”
