Rival fans think Premier League rule change gives Man City an unfair advantage

The Premier League season has not even re-started yet, and rival fans are already accusing Manchester City of having an unfair advantage in the final games due to a newly-announced rule change agreed by all clubs.

It was announced on Thursday that Premier League clubs have agreed a temporary change which will allow teams to name nine substitutes and use five in a single match. Clubs will still only have three opportunities to stop a game to make these substitutions, however.

A Premier League spokesman said: "Premier League Shareholders today agreed temporary changes to the rules relating to substitute players.

"For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, the number of substitutes that can be used during a match will increase from three to five players. This is in line with the temporary law amendment made by the International Football Association Board last month.

"Shareholders also approved for clubs to increase the maximum number of substitute players on the bench from seven to nine for the rest of the 2019/20 season."

Naturally, fans have taken to social media to react to the news and how it will affect their teams. Many have focussed on the fact that clubs with bigger squads will benefit more from the rule-change compared to smaller clubs with more limited budgets.

So it's no surprise that City are the focus of this accusation, as seen in a selection of tweets here:

Some fans even felt City had an advantage over Liverpool, despite the 25 point gap between the sides and the fact that Jurgen Klopp's men need just two wins from their remaining nine games to seal the title.
