Rival Edinburgh election candidates united against biomass

Plans for a biomass plant in Leith Docks are one of the biggest issues on the doorsteps according to local election candidates.

Results of a survey conducted by the No Leith Biomass Plant campaign have been released today.

Every candidate who completed the survey rejected the proposals by Forth Ports. The company claims it could generate 54% of Edinburgh's electricity needs.

A similar plant is proposed in Dundee, where election candidates are also campaigning on the issue. The Courier held a hustings this week where the plant was debated.

The No Leith Biomass Plant campaigners have uploaded every response to their survey online, available to download. Click here to see it.

While the Scottish Liberal Democrats do not feature in the survey, they recently outlined their opposition here.

You can read Forth Ports' plans for Leith in full here. The firm's managing director Calum Wilson wrote this guest post in support of the plant on the Guardian Edinburgh blog in March.

The City of Edinburgh Council is due to vote on the plans on 25 May.
