
Men clad in traditional happi coats ritually purify kakibo poles in preparation for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, on Friday at Kushida Shrine Hamamiya in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka. The poles, some as long as 7.2 meters, carry the festival's yamakasa floats. Full-scale preparations kicked off on the same day, when the men were allowed to wear the official attire for the festival, the city's summer highlight that runs from July 1 to 15.
