Rita Ora faces fresh backlash over use of dog with cropped ears in music video

Rita Ora is facing fresh backlash over her latest music video.

Following her controversial lockdown-breaking birthday party, the 30-year-old now faces criticism over the use of a dog with cropped ears in her video for Big, a track featuring David Guetta, Imanbek and Gunna.

The video sees Rita walking along a street in Bulgaria and going past a masked man holding a pit bull on a lead.

The pooch has cropped ears, a practice which is deemed painful and unnecessary.

Known as docking, the procedure is against the law in the UK under the Animal Welfare Act, unless it is performed for medical reasons.

However, it is not currently illegal to import animals with cropped ears from other countries.

The controversial practice dates back thousands of years and was originally performed on working dogs to prevent the risk of ear infection and other potential health risks.

The music video has been criticised by animal protection charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Director Elisa Allen said in a statement to MailOnline : "Dogs' ears are there for a purpose, and they need to use them like directional antennae.

"Ear cropping is a painful mutilation that is most commonly used by dogfighters to prevent an opponent from grabbing the ears – it has no place in a civilised, humane society.

"It involves cutting off the majority of the dog's enervated, extremely sensitive ear and taping the remnants into an unnatural, 'devilish' shape for aesthetic reasons.

"Dogs 'talk' to their human companions and other dogs using their ears, so hacking them off not only is traumatic but also robs them of vital forms of expression, communication, and balance."

The RSPCA have also slammed the practice of ear cropping, claiming that pet owners have been encouraged to do it after seeing celebrities who have dogs with cropped ears.

A number of stars, including Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock, TOWIE's Billi Mucklow and footballer Andy Carroll have faced criticism over their pets.

It's said that the government is now considering banning the import of dogs with cropped ears.

The Mirror has contacted the artists' representatives for comment.
