Police have warned that obstructive parking could lead to you having your car towed away.
Greater Manchester Police tweeted a photo of a car blocking a cycle path on Wilmslow Road, South Manchester, with the warning:
"Parking like this on Wimslow Road @GMPLongsight will get you ticketed for obstruction and risk the car being lifted."
In June 2020, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced that local authorities would be granted more powers to penalise drivers who park or load illegally in mandatory cycle lanes.
The DfT permitted local councils to use CCTV to catch the offending drivers and issue them with fines.
“Giving local authorities more powers to stop cycle lanes from becoming blocked will make it safer for cyclists," the cycling minister Chris Heaton-Harris MP said at the time.
Motorists must never park in mandatory cycle lanes, that is, those that are demarcated by a solid white line. According to the Highway Code, motorists are permitted to park in advisory cycle lanes - marked by a broken white line - but only when such an action is “unavoidable".
