Hong Kong Basel: Sudarshan Shetty - Path to Water
The increasing importance of local artists within the Asian art scene is reflected in the number of high profile exhibitions focusing on its art within Asia itself in the last few years. Beijing's Ullens Centre blazed a trail with its India Highway exhibition of 2012, in which Indian artist Sudarshan Shetty (b. 1961) played a major role. Art Basel HK: Halim al-Karim
Iraqi photographer and artist Halim al-Karim (b. 1963) was one of those featured in the Tokyo Mori Art Museum's exhibiton Arab Express of 2012, showcasing the latest art from the Arab world. Above, his Witness from Baghdad.

In the UK, Tate Modern reflects a growing focus on Asian artists with a major exhibition devoted to a pioneer of abstract art in the Middle East, Lebanese Saloua Raouda Choucair (b. 1916), running until 20 October 2013.
