Rising star wins Dermot Kennedy contest and lands first Dublin gig

Twenty-two-year-old singer/songwriter Odhran Murphy might be something of a hidden gem within the local music scene – but not for long.

He's making his Dublin debut on October 22 in The Sound House, where he will launch his new single Alone.

Fusing folk and pop, Odhran’s musical ability, raw passion and soulful voice would make you think he's a lot older.

His flair for storytelling is evident in his singles Older and Nobody Knows, which have enjoyed airplay and critical acclaim on radio stations north and south of the boarder.

The talented Co Armagh native is already something of an internet sensation with his viral TikTok covers amassing hundreds of thousands of listens.

He won a Dermot Kennedy Instagram competition last year and he has been praised by other internationally renowned artists such as Dean Lewis.

His debut gig in Crumlin Road Gaol sold out in less than 24 hours.

Odhran is looking forward to his first ever Dublin show.

He said: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be playing in Dublin, meeting fans from the South, who follow me on social media and hopefully attracting a new fan-base.

"I’m overwhelmed at how many people are travelling from the North to support me too. My full band will be playing for the first time since the pandemic and we’re so excited to create the full sound on stage.”

He added: “I’m going to be officially launching my new single Alone at The Soundhouse.

"Alone is basically about someone who is going through a breakup, however they’re uncertain and nervous about how their life is going to be without them.

"The lyrics ‘if you’re better off alone, don’t think that I’ll be following you home’ reinforce that once you’ve made that difficult decision, there’s no going back. I think most people will resonate with these sentiments and emotions. It’s an upbeat song, though, so nods to a more positive, happy future.”

Growing up in a musical household, Odhran’s love for his craft began as a child and he cites his musical influences as artists such as Passenger, Damien Rice, Dermot Kennedy, Kodaline, Hudson Taylor, Gavin James and Paolo Nutini.

One to watch, Odhran’s intimate gig at The Soundhouse will be one to remember.
